Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna(Swedish Black Hen)
Heritage poultry selected for hardiness, productivity, and temperament.
Description
The Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna (Swedish Black Hen) is a beautiful breed. The striking all-black appearance (fibromelanosis) of the Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna(Swedish Black Hen) is linked to a genetic variant also present in Asian black-skinned breeds such as Ayam Cemani Kedu and Kampung, a rare and culturally significant Indonesian breeds, Kadaknath, a rare, native Indian chicken breed known for its entirely black appearance, and Black H'Mong, a rare, landrace chicken from Southeast Asia. This connection suggests a shared, distant genetic ancestry, even though the exact historical pathway by which the trait spread remains unknown. The fibromelanosis breeds that went into the Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna (Swedish Black Hen) are believed to have been brought by sailors to Norway in the 1600s (likely from Africa/Asia). The Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna(Swedish Black Hen) is a result of foreign fibro breeds mixed with native Swedish breeds. The Bohuslän-Dal Svarthöna (Swedish Black Hen) is a Swedish breed, they are known for their healing properties, when raised for meat. They are a land race breed, with excellent foraging abilities, and are well adapted to cola climates and also tolerate heat well. Their eggs are usually medium in size, most eggs will be off white or tan.
